Liz Murray was born on 23 September, 1980, in New York City, U.S. Her real name is Elizabeth Murray.


She was born into a poor family. Her parents were drug addicts, and later they both contracted HIV.


Due to her difficult upbringing, Liz Murray was often hungry and used to eat ice cubes to satisfy her hunger.


At the age of 9, she started doing jobs at gas stations & supermarkets to fulfil her family's financial needs.


Liz Murray became homeless when she turned 15. It was around 1996 when her mother died of AIDS & her father moved to a homeless shelter.


 She started her high school education at the age of 17 and completed it in just 2 years.


Liz topped graduation with an average of 95. Due to this, she was awarded a scholarship by The New York Times & accepted into Harvard University.


In 2003, a television movie titled "Homeless to Harvard: The Liz Murray Story" was made about her life story.


Her memoir "Breaking Night" & My Journey from Homeless to Harvard," published in 2010 & got into "The New York Times Best Seller List" within a week.
