Nelson Mandela was born on 18 July 1918, in Mvezo, Union of SA. His earlier name was
His initial English name, "Nelson," was given to him by his school teacher, "Miss Mdingane," on the first day of school.
Mandela was widely involved in anti-apartheid activities, for which he was sentenced to 27 years in prison by the South African government.
Nelson Mandela was the first black person to serve as president of South Africa, from 1994 to 1999.
Mandela is also called the second Gandhi. In South Africa, he was also considered "Father of the Nation" & the "Founding Father of Democracy.".
In his family, Nelson Mandela was the only person who received a formal education.
Nelson Mandela was married three times in his life. He had six children from his three wives. He married for the 1st time in 1944 & for the last time in 1998.
Mandela started his law education at the University of the Witwatersrand in 1943, where he was the only black African student.
In his political career, Mandela received more than 250 awards, accolades, citizenships, and honorary degrees.
On 10 Dec, 1993, Mandela received the Nobel Peace Prize. In addition, he received the Bharat Ratna in 1990 & the US Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2002.
